August Birchbox

August 11, 2011 by Melanie

Time to share my August Birchbox! This month’s theme was product innovations. All in all, this wasn’t my favorite box by any means, but from looking at some of the other August boxes that I’ve seen so far, I’m really glad this was the one I got! Here are the products that I received:

[amazon_link id=”B000WM54E8″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]June Jacobs Papaya Purifying Enzyme Masque[/amazon_link] [amazon_link id=”B000WM54E8″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]June Jacobs Papaya Purifying Enzyme Masque[/amazon_link] This was the first item in my box that I saw when I opened it. Its a face mask, which I’m glad I got as opposed to the cleanser which I saw in other Birchboxes. I don’t really like messing with my cleansing routine, but I’m always open to trying out a new mask.

[amazon_link id=”B0036XV0X4″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Ouidad Climate Control(R) Heat & Humidity Gel 8.5 oz[/amazon_link] [amazon_link id=”B0036XV0X4″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Ouidad Climate Control Heat & Humidity Gel[/amazon_link] I feel like I have so many hair products that are supposed to help protect against heat and humity 😛 That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but I can’t imagine this being anything special. I will definitely give it a go though to see how it works!

[amazon_link id=”B00353ECJO” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Anthony Shaveworks The Cool Fix, 2 Ounce[/amazon_link] [amazon_link id=”B00353ECJO” target=”_blank” container=”Shaveworks The Cool Fix Target Gel Lotion” container_class=”” ]Shaveworks The Cool Fix Target Gel Lotion[/amazon_link] Now this is the product that I was most excited about, and the only one I’ve tried so far. As I’ve mentioned before, I have really flaky skin around my nose and under my mouth, and exfoliators are supposed to help with that (which is what this essentially is since it contains glycolic acid, salicylic acid and phytic acid). And (spoiler alert) it really did help! My flakes have drastically gone down overnight since I used it. I actually just bought another product by philosophy called “the afterglow” which is supposed to be similar, so I am going to compare the two products. If this one works better, I will purchase the full size!

[amazon_link id=”B00161HES8″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer To Go 0.5 oz Original[/amazon_link] [amazon_link id=”B00161HES8″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer[/amazon_link] I actually have another sample of this that I got from Sephora awhile back. I forgot I had it until I saw this sample in the birchbox. Looking forward to trying that out since I’m in the market for a new face primer (my current primer by Tarte is almost out).

[amazon_link id=”B005DOQUMA” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Solid Chloe Hair Tie Set - Banana, Neon Pink and Turquoise[/amazon_link] [amazon_link id=”B005DOQUMA” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Twistband[/amazon_link] (in black)
This is, for all intents and purposes, a piece of elastic ribbon string that is tied on the end. Why is this a product in my Birchbox? And more importantly, why does it cost $5 for three of these? Not only does it not even keep my hair up (and I don’t have thick hair by any means) but it certainly doesn’t look “cute” on my wrist. It looks like I literally tied a black ribbon around my wrist…people in my office probably think I’m commemorating some tragic event. They have other ones on their website that have designs or pendants and are kind of cute, though. The one positive is that is does feel nice around my wrist and doesn’t feel like its cutting into my skin like other elastics. But if it doesn’t actually hold up my hair, then there’s no real reason for it to be on my wrist anyway. I can’t believe I just wrote a paragraph about this stupid thing.

I’ve never heard of Birchbox, I’d say it’s something we don’t get over on our side of the pond! We do have something called Glossybox which strikes me as a similar idea – it’s just started shipping to Ireland, but I haven’t subscribed to it yet. I’m a bit scared the first box will be amazing but that the quality will go downhill after that!

Thanks for the review! Certainly wanted to try the facial mask myself too!
LOL @ your paragraph about the hair tie. I too did not enjoy the cheaply tied elastic.

I ended up getting the box completely opposite to yours and didn’t really like it.
